DUETTE ELEMENTARY
Florida's only operating one-room school!

The threat of closing has loomed over Duette Elementary for many years. In August 2009, Ms. Donna, parents and community members formed the DUETTE EDUCATION FOUNDATION, INC. The purpose of the DEFI is to implement, provide, and maintain a program of education for school grades K-5 for students living in the Duette area. Students from other areas are also welcome and qualified to enroll.

On December 19, 2009 the Foundation contracted with Manatee County School District to operate the  school. On January 5, 2010  the school reopened with 11 students in grades K-5. Ms. Donna returned as Teaching Principal.  Today principal, teacher, teacher assistant and custodian also make up the staff.  The FTE allocation is not sufficient for the operation of the school. The Foundation is planning fund raising events to supplement. Donors have already come forward and the Foundation welcomes more. 
The Foundation is also planning events to market the school to more students. 

HISTORY

Located on 10 - 12 beautiful acres half-way between Parrish and Wauchula on SR 62 in Manatee County, Duette Elementary is Florida's last operating one-room school. Duette School actually has 5 rooms but all the elementary students are in one room and taught by one teacher. The building was erected on this site in 1930 and 3 schools were consolidated at that time. In the early years Duette School was K-12. Duette School was a "strawberry school". The school year began in May and ended in December. Children were needed to help pick strawberries. Up to 5 generations of a family have attended here.

A special aspect of the school is that traditional ideas are valued in this country setting while the latest teaching methods are employed. Up to date technology is an everyday tool for students. Students in 2nd - 5th grades have an iBook 24-7.  The multiage classroom is continuous progress and child-centered naturally, not by design. The school is staffed by one elementary teacher, one full-time assistant teacher and a custodian. All students bring their lunch.

Duette is the ultimate multiage class with students ages 5 through 12 years old. Presently there are 18 students enrolled at Duette. Students with special needs are included in the classroom.

Duette Elementary has remained open with unseemly odds against it.
